13 Card Rummy

The objective of the game is simple - form valid sequences (including one pure sequence) and sets from the cards in your hand.

The game begins with the player to the left of the dealer picking a card from the closed deck or the open deck. The player can then pick one or more cards from the closed deck or the open deck to form valid sets and sequences. The player can also use the joker card as a substitute for any card to form a valid set or sequence.

The player can then discard one card to the open deck, which can be picked up by any of the other players.The game continues in a clockwise direction until one of the players has formed all their cards into valid sequences and sets and declares a valid hand.

Points Rummy

Pool Rummy

Pool Rummy is played between 2 to 6 players with one or two standard decks of cards (depending on the players at the table) and a pre-decided points tally (101 or 201 Rummy).

Players who reach the tally get eliminated and the player with the lowest score is declared the winner. The player who makes a valid declaration gets zero points while the scores of other players are calculated based on the number of unmatched cards.

Rules of 13-card Indian Rummy

1. A player must form at least two sequences, out of which one must be a pure sequence.
2. A pure sequence is a sequence in which all the cards are of the same suit and are in consecutive order.
3. A player can use the joker card as a substitute for any card to form a valid set or sequence.
4. A player must pick a card from the closed deck or the open deck before discarding a card.
5. A player must discard only one card at a time to the open deck.
6. The player who declares their hand first and has the least number of points wins the game.
7. In case of a tie, the player who declared their hand first wins the game.
8. The use of any unfair means to win the game is strictly prohibited and can lead to disqualification.

Sequence in Indian Rummy

Sequence is a combination of three or more cards arranged in consecutive order. There are two types of sequences:

Pure Sequence: A sequence of consecutive cards of the same suit (7♠️, 8♠️, 9♠️). Joker/wild joker cannot be used to make a pure sequence.

Impure Sequence: A sequence of same suited consecutive cards formed with a Joker/wild joker (7♠️, 8♠️, Joker).

Sets in Indian Rummy

Set is a combination of three or more cards of the same value but of different suits (6♠️, 6♥️, 6♦️). A joker/wild joker can be used to make a set (6♠️, 6♥️, Joker).

Joker

Jokers are one of the most important cards in Rummy and can make or break your game depending on how you use them. As per rummy rules, jokers can be substituted to form impure sequences or sets. Joker cards cannot be used to form pure sequences.

There are two types of jokers: printed jokers and wild jokers:

1. Losing players will get penalised with points. Here’s a breakdown of how the points are calculated:

4. First Drop: If you quit the game before or during your very first move without picking a card, it is called a first drop. The penalty points for a first drop are 20 in a points rummy game.
5. Middle Drop: If you quit a rummy game any time after the first turn, you will get a penalty of 40 points. If you miss 3 consecutive turns, you will be automatically dropped out of the game and will be penalised 40 points.
6. Leave Table: If you quit after picking a card, you will get a middle drop and get a penalty of 40 points.
